SIL is for NDIS participants with higher or more complex support needs who need regular, ongoing assistance with daily living - whether that's a few hours a day or 24/7 supervision and support. Participants might live alone, or share a home with one or two other people who have similar support needs.
Support workers help with things like personal care, preparing meals, medication prompts, household tasks, budgeting, transport, and getting to appointments or community activities. Where a participant has a Behaviour Support Plan, trained staff also help implement those strategies consistently. Shifts are rostered around the person's needs - this can include overnight and weekend support.
Generally: participants build practical skills (cooking, budgeting, using public transport), gain confidence and independence over time, and develop stronger daily routines and safety at home.

SIL is generally funded through a participant's Core Supports budget, based on an assessed need for higher daily support. To access it, a participant (usually with their support coordinator or planner) needs supporting evidence - typically an occupational therapist's functional assessment and Roster of Care - showing why this level of support is required.
