STA is for participants who need a short, planned stay away from their usual home – commonly to give a family member or informal carer a break, to trial a different living environment, to build independence and life skills, or to maintain stability during a disruption at home (e.g. renovations, family changes).

A short stay (with a clear start and end date) at a supported location, with support workers on hand for personal care, meals, and planned activities. Depending on the goals of the stay, this might focus on skill-building, social connection, or simply a relaxed, well-supported break.

Generally: carers get a genuine break, participants often return home with increased confidence, new skills, or social connections made during the stay.

Support workers

STA is funded through a participant’s Core Supports budget and is generally capped around 28 days per year, used flexibly (e.g. a weekend, or a longer block). To access STA, a participant typically needs it discussed and included in their plan with their planner or support coordinator, with a clear reason (e.g. carer respite or skill-building) tied to their goals.
